GIG REVIEW: Untamed Silence, Westenra @ Eighteen91, Whitby
This picturesque coastal town was set alive last Saturday with the sounds of Untamed Silence and Westenra, the refurbished church style venue Eighteen91 brought to life with lights and smoke.
Kicking off the night was three-piece Goth Rock band Westenra, with the thundering chorus chants in They Don’t Know, to the alluring bass introduction featured in the track Empowered, the dark troupe capture the gothic side and history of Whitby like a mystical dream.
The song Like A Bomb received a crowd of bobbing heads and high energy, a fantastic support, and if you are into Gothic rock, keep an eye out for these.
Headlining the night is Untamed Silence, a four-piece synthesis combining heavy rock with elements of prog. Launching into opening song The Game, then into newly released single Long Time Dead, it is clear that the heavy metal legends Saxon chose the right band to support them later this year.
The Power grabs attention with singer’s Debbie’s soaring notes, Disintegrate is emotional and soft, yet still striking.
Last year’s single Nowhere kicks in with strong cymbal strikes, and the song builds immensely, vigorous chords and the chorus breakdown is meaty, bringing an unexpected time change.
The song ends and the room cry out for one more song, unwilling the let the night end.
Deadspeak starts, and the room enlivens. The formidable drum pattern, bouncing riffs and punching vocals keep the energy in the room at an all-time high.
Overall, the night was simply brilliant, shouting “Whitby is not to be missed”. High energy performances that showcased a range of musical talent and unmissable stage presence. The crowd's enthusiasm and the band's passion for their music made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. It's clear that these are bands to watch, and I eagerly await their next performance.
